i.
What horse cloning is
Horse cloning produces a genetic twin of a donor horse, from a cell line banked while the horse is alive. The first cloned horse was born in 2003, and the practice has since been used for sport horses, particularly polo and show jumping, and to recover the breeding value of geldings.
The sequence is the same as for other species: cell banking first, from a skin biopsy grown into a line over about 21 days and stored in two cities; cloning, genetic testing or regenerative therapy can follow later, from the same line.
ii.
How it works here
The biopsy is taken at the stable by your own veterinarian or ours. Once the line is banked, nuclear transfer and embryo transfer are carried out at our specialised cloning facility, and gestation runs about 11 months.
Studbooks and sport
Studbook and competition rules differ widely. Many breed registries, including several for Arabians and Thoroughbreds, do not register cloned horses, while some sports federations do permit clones to compete. We ask owners to check the rules that matter to them before beginning.

What it is not
A cloned horse is…
- A genetic twin, able to breed normally.
- A way to recover a gelding's breeding value.
- Born about 11 months after embryo transfer.
A cloned horse is not…
- Accepted by every studbook – many do not register clones.
- Trained, or proven, at birth.
- A guarantee of performance.
For regenerative options and breed notes, see horses.

Questions
- How much does horse cloning cost?
- By consultation, from a banked cell line. Banking itself is $5,000 in the UAE and $6,500 in the GCC.
- Can a gelding be cloned?
- Yes. A genetic twin of a gelding is an intact male able to breed, which is why some owners bank geldings.
- Will my studbook register a clone?
- Many do not. We recommend checking with your breed society before beginning.
- Can my own vet take the biopsy?
- Yes. We send a sealed kit and instructions, or our veterinarian attends alongside your team.
- How long does horse cloning take?
- Typically 15 to 24 months from an established line, including gestation of about 11 months.
- Where does cloning itself take place?
- At our specialised cloning facility, once a line is banked and the owner decides to proceed.
