Dog cloning,from a banked line.

Dog cloning produces a genetic twin of a donor dog, starting from a cell line banked while the dog is alive or shortly after death.

i.

What dog cloning is

Dog cloning is the production of a puppy carrying the same nuclear DNA as a donor dog, using a cell line grown from a small skin biopsy. Dogs have been cloned from adult somatic cells since 2005, and the method is now well established for working, show and companion dogs alike.

The process has two separate stages, and they are easy to confuse. First comes cell banking: a biopsy, grown into a living line over about 21 days, then frozen in two cities. Second, only if you decide, comes cloning itself, carried out at our specialised cloning facility.

ii.

How it works here

The biopsy is taken at a partner veterinary clinic or at home. Once the line is banked and tested, nuclear transfer places the donor's nucleus into a prepared egg cell. Viable embryos are transferred to a surrogate dog, and gestation runs about 63 days.

Breed considerations

Brachycephalic breeds such as bulldogs and pugs are usually biopsied at a clinic, where sedation can be managed carefully if needed. Giant breeds age earlier, so banking before the age of six is often sensible.

What it is not

A cloned dog is…

  • A genetic twin of the donor.
  • A healthy puppy, raised by you from about eight weeks.
  • Verified by DNA against the banked line.

A cloned dog is not…

  • The dog you had, returned.
  • A copy of training, habits or memories.
  • Certain to have identical markings.

Questions

How much does dog cloning cost?
From $85,000, from a banked cell line. Banking itself is $5,000 in the UAE and $6,500 in the GCC.
How long does dog cloning take?
The line is ready in about 21 days. A full programme, including gestation of about 63 days, usually spans six to twelve months.
Can any breed be cloned?
Any breed with a healthy banked line, subject to the availability of a suitable surrogate.
Will the puppy look identical to my dog?
Usually very similar, but markings and size can differ. Character will be its own.
Can I bank cells after my dog has died?
Often, if tissue is collected as soon as possible and the body is kept cool, not frozen.
Where does the actual cloning take place?
At our specialised cloning facility, after a cell line has been banked and the decision is made to proceed.
